» Jerry3 - Need help with my situation

I have been involved with my wife for nearly 10 years. When we first met I was recently divorced from my 1st wife and I had a young son from the marriage. At first, my wife treated him wonderfully - like her own son. Over the last 10 years we have had two children together. My wife now has little to nothing to do with my son from previous marriage. At this point she does not speak to him and he is "afraid" of her. My oldest son does not speak to her either because he does not feel comfortable around her. I've tried therapy in the past, which worked for a while, but soon fell back to how it used to be. My in-laws also do not treat him like a grandson. Christmas is a nightmare. They will purchase numerous toys for my younger children and only 1-2 for my oldest son. I need help!

First of all, let me say that I think it is awesome that the health and well being of your family is important enough to you to post!

Therapy is still the best option. Concentrate on your son. Maybe you and he can go to therapy together, if your wife doesn't want to attend or apply what is learned permanently.

As far as your in laws are concerned, you have no control over what other people do, think or feel. You can however, use the experience as an opportunity to teach your son that the number of gifts received are not important. What is important is spending time together as a family, the true meaning of the holiday being celebrated and the love and thought that goes into each and every gift purchased.

I hope this helps, good luck to you and your family, they are fortunate to have you looking after them!
